Ten-year-old Leah McCormick just lost both parents in an

 auto accident and is sent to live at her stepsister’s house

 (called “The Shadows”)  in upstate New York.

  Leah, who stopped speaking after the funeral, is suffering from

 depression and is having suicidal thoughts. Her stepsister Alice

 and her husband Andrew are at a loss to help her and her Aunt

 Sherry has no time to take care of her.


                                                                                                   

      Leah’s only comfort is a mysterious tin filled with her late 

      mothers miniature paintings. Soon Leah meets Samantha, a

      red-haired mischievous tomboy who slowly gets Leah to open

      up and come to grips with her grief and loneliness.  But there's

      a secret going in "The Shadows", a dangerous secret that could

      lead to salvation...or suicide!
